Cockatoo Island hosts a range of durable rock materials from historic mining and quarrying activities, well suited for use as subsea ballast in offshore and marine infrastructure projects.

Geotechnical assessments on the island have identified specific formations with the strength, density, and angularity required for rock armour and subsea stabilisation. These materials meet key performance requirements for underwater placement, offering high resistance to movement and erosion in dynamic marine conditions. Their proximity to deepwater loading facilities enables direct supply to offshore contractors without costly overland transport.
